Current stage:

Issue Prioritisation Development Selection Implementation

Improvement overview

The MSC is working to create a new Standard for assessing mixed stock and multispecies fisheries. The proposed new Standard will contribute to greater efficiency and accessibility to the MSC program for fisheries that are catching multiple species at the same time.

Current status

The MSC has looked at global best practice for managing mixed stock and multispecies fisheries, and have compiled case studies from global mixed fisheries. We have also held a workshop to gather information and opinions.

In 2016/2017, the MSC Technical Advisory Board recommended further development of an index-species based approach for further development.

A draft of the Standard was available for public consultation in the Autumn 2016, and underwent peer review and iterative updates in early 2017.

With the support of the Walton Family Foundation, the MSC is currently trialling the Standard in mixed stock demersal fisheries in Indonesia and Mexico in 2017/2018. The results are anticipated in the first quarter of 2019.

The second draft will be available for early consultation in 2019. (View the full terms of reference for the development of an MSC Mixed Fisheries Standard)
