Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
How do you define a credible Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in relation to the Mass Balance Standard?

Answer:
The initial draft of the ASC Feed Standard outlines the different sources of wild fish that the ASC will include in their feed standard claim.

They get their definition of a comprehensive FIP from the Conservation Alliance for Sustainable Seafood, who developed guidelines for FIPs approximately three years ago. There are two categories of FIP – comprehensive and basic. A comprehensive FIP includes having a pre-assessment based on the MSC Standard, an action plan tracking and reporting progress publicly and having independent third party verification of progress every three years. The verification is done by Fishery Progress anything that meets these definitions are listed on the Fishery Progress webpages
